Rope Custom

What is Rope Customization?

Rope customization is the act of simply replacing a sneaker's original shoelaces with thick, rope-like laces – rope laces. It originated in the UK street scene and is now changing footwear around the world. No drilling, no tools required, completed in 5-10 minutes.

By threading 8-12mm diameter ropes, the volume of the shoe changes, the silhouette changes, and the amount of visual information around your feet changes.

The same white Air Force 1 remains "just like everyone else's" with its original laces. With rope laces, it becomes "your own unique pair." Unlike paint or deconstructed customs, no alterations are made to the shoe itself, so there's no risk of damage. You can always revert it if you get tired of it.

No Tools No drilling or tools required. Can be done with just your hands.
5-10 Min Even for beginners, it's completed in 5-10 minutes. No special skills needed.
Reversible Thread the original laces back in to restore them to their original state. Since the shoe itself isn't damaged, its resale value is preserved.

Origin

Central Cee changed UK footwear

The UK rap/drill scene has an unusual obsession with footwear, or "creps." The culture is such that how you wear a particular model directly introduces you. Rope customization emerged from this environment.

The trend was definitively set by Central Cee. Hailing from Shepherd's Bush, West London, he's the man who propelled UK rap onto the global stage. From around 2022, he consistently appeared in public sporting clean white Air Force 1s with only rope laces, making "rope laces" a common language among UK youth.

The wave didn't stop. By 2023, AF1s with rope laces had become a summer staple, and names like Vinicius Júnior and Lil Baby also joined the rope lace trend. Central Cee himself later even secured an official collaboration with Nike.

The key to the authentic style is simplicity. Don't touch the main body of the shoe. Add only the rope to a clean pair. Let the laces do the talking.

Tokyo

It's coming to Tokyo, too.

This wave is starting to reach Japan as well. Rope laces are appearing more on the feet of people in the domestic HIPHOP scene, dancers, and skaters, and posts tagged "rope custom" and "rope force" are gaining traction on social media.

Overseas, finished sneakers with rope laces are sold at high prices as custom items. But honestly, all you need are the laces. Your existing sneakers can be the canvas today.

Match

Which sneakers to pair them with?

Rope Force (AF1 × Rope Laces)

This is the entry point. The combination with Air Force 1, called "Rope AF1" overseas, is known as "Rope Force" in Japan. With white AF1s × white rope, you get a classic clean look, while white AF1s × accent color makes your footwear the star.

Dunks, Jordans

The basic approach is to pick up one of the panel colors with the rope. The more voluminous the silhouette, the more pronounced the presence of thick laces.

Two ways to choose colors

① Use similar colors to change only the volume and silhouette. ② Choose a contrasting color to make it an accent. If you're unsure, pick a color from your outfit for the day. Thick laces not only enhance the look but also improve the hold and are less likely to loosen. The size of the knot and how you manage the excess also change the expression.

Start

Starting is 4 steps

10mm ropes are not threaded directly through the eyelets. The thin lacing needle included in the set acts as a guide. The process involves these four steps:

Step 1 Preparation. Remove the original shoelaces.
Step 2 Thread the included thin lacing needle through the eyelets.
Step 3 Thread the rope through the thin lacing needle.
Step 4 Adjust the shape and tie, then it's complete.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What's the difference between rope laces and regular shoelaces?

Thickness and structure. Unlike typical flat laces, rope laces are circular braids with a diameter of 8-12mm. Just by threading them, the three-dimensionality and presence of your shoes are elevated.

Q. Can beginners do it?

Yes, they can. The rope is not threaded directly through the eyelets; instead, a thin lacing needle is included as a guide, so no drilling or tools are required. Even for beginners, it can be completed in 5-10 minutes. You can always revert it to the original laces by re-threading them.

Q. Which length should I choose?

Determine by your shoe size. HYPELACE provides a recommended size chart on the product page. If in doubt, choose a longer length and tuck away any excess inside.

Q. Which sneakers are they suitable for?

First and foremost, Air Force 1s. They also pair well with Dunks and Jordan series shoes. Picking up one of the panel colors with the rope creates a cohesive look.
